the best I can do is to leave it alone
and walk my heart away.
To turn from my tears and my need to atone,
to dismiss your face each day.
It isnít enough Ė I am gasping for you Ė
so this is the best I can do:

the best I can doís what I shouldíve done then
when your hair was mine to touch,
when you scooped up the tears that now fall from my pen Ė
but the best is not to clutch
the scraps of my ruin that remind me of you,
so this is the best I can do:

the best I can do is pretend not to feel
and perhaps that makes it true.
My heart is a maze, not a guide, and whatís real
is the grief that must ensue.
Iím bleeding and blind and donít know what to do
but Iíll do what I didnít for you:

the best I can do is do nothing at all
and forget our faithful wait.
Conclude that forgiveness canít answer my call
and remorse has come too late.
The best I can do is do nothing for you.
